Making Money on Line

Taxpayer Dollars at Work

December 20, 2010 11:58 A.M.

By Katrina Trinko

Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.) released today his annual Wastebook, which details lavish government funding on obscure projects.

“As you look at these examples, ask yourself: at a time when we are borrowing over $44,000 for every person in the country, are these items a priority and are they a federal responsibility?” writes Coburn in the introduction, adding that the cost of the 100 projects he highlights totals over $11.5 billion. Here’s some of the “best” taxpayer-funded items:

● $1.8 million to the Neon Boneyard Park and Museum, which collects and displays discarded neon Las Vegas signs.

● $2.9 million to a group of professors at University of California-Irvine for research on internet games such as World of Warcraft and Second Life and how, according to the university’s press release, they “can help organizations collaborate and compete more effectively in the global marketplace.”

● $239,100 to Stanford University for a study on how people date and find love online.

● $137,530 to a Dartmouth professor Mary Flanagan to make, according to Wastebook, a “video game called ‘Layoff,’ a puzzle-style game in which players fire as many people as they can as quickly as possible.”

● $150,000 to the Vermont town of Monkton to erect signs warning drivers to look out for salamanders crossing the road.

● $47.6 million to Atlanta, Georgia to build a streetcar system — on the exact same route as an existing subway system.

1. The offensive line deserves more blame than it has received so far this season.

Yesterday was a disaster for the entire offense, especially the offensive line. Michael Vick receives the majority of the blame but it's guys like Max Jean-Gilles and Mike McGlynn who get their butts kicked their whole game. How many hits did Vick take yesterday? 12? It was absurd.

2. Michael Vick's health is the key to success for the rest of this season.

If this man is injured, goodbye. The season is over. Kevin Kolb might win a playoff game. Might. That's all. He's the type of quarterback who would lead the Eagles to a big win in the wild-card round of the playoffs, then throw four interceptions against the Bears in the divisional round. Protecting Michael Vick is as important for the Eagles as the Fantastic Foursome is to the Phillies.

3. Chad Hall is a terrible kick returner.

Chad Hall was disgraceful yesterday. How do you return three kicks for 44 yards, with a long of 16? Seriously, how is that possible? And why did we sign Gerard Lawson if he's not going to play? Hall is lucky to even be on the team. A good job returning kicks yesterday would have gone a long way to determining if he earns a roster spot for next season.

4. No matter how poorly he plays, Michael Vick will turn in at least one highlight reel play each game.

Vick could complete 3 of 19 passes for -14 yards and six interceptions, and I'd put down money that he'll still provide you with a wow, did you see that, highlight reel type of play. Yesterday's juke on the 10-yard touchdown run was pretty impressive, as were a couple of moves to avoid a sack. He was still terrible for the entire game, but Vick is the type of quarterback who can turn a game around with one spectacular play that no one else on this planet can make.

5. The Dimitri Patterson experiment is officially a disaster.

He allowed three touchdowns in the first half of the Miracle at the New Meadowlands last week. And he was benched yesterday night for Joselio Hanson. Despite four interceptions, a touchdown, and some pretty impressive tackling, Patterson hasn't been able to do the one thing a cornerback absolutely has to do: cover the receiver.

6. Stewart who?

When Stewart Bradley returns from his dislocated elbow, hopefully in the wild-card round of the postseason, he may be the backup to Jamar Chaney. Chaney followed up his 16-tackle performance against the New York Giants with seven tackles against the Vikings, two for a loss. He also made a pretty impressive knock down on a deep pass across the middle. Not bad for a seventh round draft pick making his second career NFL start.

7. When the Eagles have never seen a quarterback before, they don't know how to win.

The Eagles frustrate me so much because we can't beat the no-name quarterbacks. I'm talking guys like Bruce Gradkowski in 2006, JaMarcus Russell in 2009, and Joe Webb in 2010. Webb still hasn't thrown a touchdown pass in the NFL, but he didn't commit a turnover yesterday. He also rushed for a highlight-reel 9-yard touchdown, and completed 17 of 26 passes for 195 yards.

8. More than any poor in-game decisions he makes, Andy Reid's worst is knowing when to go for fourth down.

4th and 18 at midfield with four minutes to go, down by 10, and Andy Reid calls for the punt. Someone please explain to me the logic behind this. Seriously, I want to know. You're playing for a bye in the postseason. You have a quarterback capable of converting 4th and 18 with his arm or his legs (although it was obviously a long shot). And you give up. That's gutless. That's completely pathetic football right there. I couldn't believe that call.

9. The regular season is over.

Officially? No. But the Eagles have the third seed clinched regardless of whether they beat Dallas 44-6 or lose 24-0. Michael Vick probably won't play again in the regular season. DeSean Jackson shouldn't. McCoy shouldn't. It's annoying for guys into player stats like me, but I'm obviously more interested in seeing the Eagles rest up players for a run at a Super Bowl title than I am in seeing Michael Vick try to record his 10th rushing touchdown of the season.

10. The Eagles have about as good of a chance as reaching the Super Bowl as your average NFC playoff team.

Falcons. Bears. Eagles. Saints. Packers/Giants/(Bucs). Those are your playoff teams in the NFC. (Playoff teams who will finish without a winning record were not listed.) I personally think the Eagles could make the Super Bowl this season. Then again, so could the Packers. Or Saints. Or Falcons. Or any of the teams I listed above. No team stands out to me. Not one team. None of those five teams would surprise me if I found out they represented the NFC in the Super Bowl. A week ago, I thought the Eagles were the favorites. Maybe I was just caught up in the emotion of the Miracle at the New Meadowlands. Now I think we're an average playoff team compared to the rest of the NFC this season. Maybe slightly above average. But as far as reaching the Super Bowl will go, the Eagles will likely need to beat three quality teams, led by quality quarterbacks, with quality defenses. There are no Joe Webb's in the postseason. Stephen McGee will not be quarterbacking in the postseason. Neither will Shaun Hill or Alex Smith. The Eagles need to beat the best to be considered the best.

foreclosure report

A press release from LPS' Mortgage Monitor Report shows Foreclosure Inventory Rising for 5th Straight Month

The November Mortgage Monitor report released by Lender Processing Services, Inc. (LPS) shows that the volume of loans moving to REO continued to drop as moratoria further delayed foreclosure sales. While the 90+ delinquency category has steadily declined, the number of loans moving to seriously delinquent status beyond 90 days far outpaced the number of foreclosure starts. Nearly 2.2 million loans are 90 days or more delinquent but not yet in foreclosure.

Foreclosure inventories also continued to rise for the fifth straight month as delinquent accounts are referred for foreclosure, but the sale of foreclosure properties continued to decline. When compared to January 2008 levels, the foreclosure inventory of Jumbo Prime loans is nearly seven times higher; the inventory of Agency Prime loans is nearly six times higher; and the foreclosure inventory of Option ARM loans is approaching five times the inventory in January 2008.

The report also shows that one-third of loans that are 90 days or more delinquent have not made a payment in a year; however, the number of new problem loans declined nearly 5.4 percent from October, which is opposite of the seasonality trend that typically impacts new delinquencies this time of year. Self-cures for loans one to two months delinquent increased in November to a six-month high.

In the month of November, 261,153 loans were referred to foreclosure, which represents a 0.7% month-over-month decline. The total number of delinquent loans is nearly 2.1 times historical averages - and foreclosure inventory is currently at 7.7 times historical averages.

As reported in LPS' First Look release, other key results from LPS' latest Mortgage Monitor report include:

  • Total U.S. loan delinquency rate: 9.02 percent
  • Total U.S. foreclosure inventory rate: 4.08 percent
  • Total U.S. non-current* loan rate: 13.10 percent
  • States with most non-current* loans: Florida, Nevada, Mississippi, Georgia, New Jersey
  • States with fewest non-current* loans: North Dakota, South Dakota, Alaska, Wyoming, Montana
Charts From The Report

The report is 34 pages long. Inquiring minds may wish to give it a closer look. Here are a few select charts.

Delinquent and Foreclosure Rates by Month

Total Foreclosure Percent By Product

Foreclosure Increase Compared to January 2008

Loan Cures

Serious Delinquencies

Foreclosure Starts vs. Serious Delinquencies

While there are some welcome trends in direction, actual foreclosures are lagging. The pent-up need to foreclose is huge.

Moreover, mortgage rates have rising nearly a full percentage point in the last 45 days. This will put a damper on already depressed home sales, making it harder to unload inventory.

Look for months of inventory to soar in the upcoming months with continued declines in home prices. Contrary to what most think, falling prices are a good thing. Home prices need to fall to a point low enough where genuine demand kicks in.

Foreclosure moratoriums are counterproductive and exacerbate existing problems.

"Treasury's reluctance to acknowledge HAMP's shortcomings has had real consequences," the bailout watchdog declared in its report. An "untold number of borrowers may go without help -- all because Treasury failed to acknowledge HAMP's shortcomings in time."

Housing experts have declared that the administration's botched program leaves the broader housing market and the economy susceptible to more shocks ahead, as foreclosed homes pile up, pulling down real estate values.

"Having dragged their feet through various revisions to the program, and with their ability to now redesign it shut down, they have ensured HAMP its place in the trash bin of history," said noted bond analyst Joshua Rosner, a managing director at Graham Fisher & Co. who analyzes housing.

The abundance of data in the oversight panel's report presents a picture of a flimsy government program that has been swamped by an unceasing flood of homeowners landing in trouble and houses sinking into foreclosure. Since the program began, nine new foreclosures have been initiated for every permanent loan modification that has been approved, the panel found.

Under the program, troubled homeowners who qualify are enrolled for three-month trial periods during which they make lower monthly payments. So long as they make their payments on time and document their distressed situation, borrowers are supposed to be automatically rolled into so-called permanent modification plan in which their monthly payments stay relatively flat for five years.

Some homeowners have been stuck in the trial phase for as long as 20 months, according to the Congressional Oversight Panel. The chairman of the panel, former Delaware Senator Ted Kaufman, called that "egregious," during Monday evening's call with reporters. He singled out for criticism the giant banks that collect mortgage payments--servicers, in industry parlance. He also blamed Treasury for failing to hold the mortgage companies to account.

"There is extensive anecdotal evidence servicers aren't living up to the rules," said Kaufman, a Democrat. "Treasury is not nearly being as forceful as they can."

The panel asserted that Treasury can levy penalties on mortgage companies for failing to abide by the program's rules. Treasury insists that it lacks such authority, though it clearly has the power to claw back the incentive payments it makes to servicers for enrolling homeowners in five-year modification plans. Despite heavy criticism from Congress, Treasury has withheld no payments. Treasury is now considering withholding payments for 132 modified loans, the panel's report notes.

Even those homeowners who have successfully navigated the Kafkaesque bureaucracy required to secure a loan modification have rarely received significant relief. Nearly 95 percent of such homeowners have ended up with higher principal balances after receiving a modification, according to the report. More than 76 percent of homeowners in the program owe more on their mortgage than the home is worth, a situation referred to as being "underwater."

About 10.8 million, or 22.5 percent, of all homeowners with a mortgage were underwater as of Sept. 30, according to CoreLogic, a data provider.

A range of housing experts have long argued that the foreclosure crisis can only be stemmed by a more aggressive program that shrinks the outstanding balances on mortgages. The Treasury and the financial industry has long resisted such calls on the grounds that it would cost someone money--either the banks or taxpayers.

Writing down principal balances on mortgages would give people whose are worth less than they owe greater incentive to stay current on their payments, say experts.

"Negative equity is a primary factor holding back the housing market and broader economy," Mark Fleming, CoreLogic's chief economist, said in a Monday statement.

According to the oversight panel's report, homeowners are falling further underwater after their loans are modified under Obama's plan. After their loan is restructured, the typical HAMP homeowner owes $1.25 on their mortgage for every $1.00 their home is worth.

The oversight panel zeroed in on the problem of underwater borrowers as a key challenge for the economy. With so many people underwater, many homeowners who would like to sell their properties and move to parts of the country with more abundant jobs are stuck in place. Some borrowers have opted to simply forego making payments and relinquish their homes to foreclosure.

"Negative equity can restrict the ability of homeowners to move, whether for family reasons or to pursue greater job opportunities, since home sale proceeds will not be sufficient to repay their loan," the report states. "It also provides an incentive for borrowers who can afford to pay their mortgages to stop paying intentionally and walk away."

This dynamic seems likely to worsen before it gets better, with many analysts anticipating that housing prices will continue to fall in much of the country through the end of next year. Housing prices have fallen by 30 percent nationwide since early 2006, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index.

Massad, the Treasury official overseeing the rescue program, said the department grasps that underwater borrowers are playing a significant role in exacerbating the foreclosure crisis. He emphasized that Treasury recently launched additional programs aimed at shrinking balances for people whose homes are worth less than they owe the bank.

But despite these programs, mortgage companies have reduced the principal for only three percent of the homeowners in the HAMP program, according to the the panel's report.

"Clearly, it's a big, big problem," said Kaufman.

Rosner and other experts assert that Treasury should force lenders to write down second mortgages, such as home equity lines of credit--a popular way in which homeowners turned increased real estate values into the cash during the boom. And if writing down those loans still leaves borrowers unable to make their monthly payments, primary mortgages should be written down, he added.

But that approach has been emphatically rejected by Treasury and the large banks, who are themselves on the hook for many second mortgages. While the largest four American banks generally sold off primary mortgages to investors and now merely collect fees for handling the bills, these same four banks themselves hold 43 percent of second mortgages--an amount reaching $420 billion, according to the panel.

That, say analysts, largely explains the dismal state of the administration's foreclosure program and Treasury's unwillingness to champion the only clear remedy: writing down principal balances. Indeed, the oversight panel concludes that forcing lenders to absorb losses on second mortgages could leave the four biggest banks severely crippled.

"Treasury's HAMP program has, in policy and practice, been a colossal failure," Rosner wrote in an e-mail. "Rather than working in the interests of borrowers and investors, whose interests are fundamentally aligned, HAMP appears to have been designed to shield banks and their captive servicers from the negative financial impact that a reasonable resolution to the crisis would require."

how to budget personal finances

Automate Your Finances to Spend Less Time Managing Your Accounts

Despite how simple the process can be, most of us are terrible at saving and paying bills. Here's a strategy to effectively automate most of your finances to keep you saving and out of late fee trouble.

Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You To Be Rich.com has put together a system for managing your personal finances that only takes about an hour of your time each week. The video above fully explains the process in detail, but here's the gist. First, you want to set up your bills and other payments so they're all happening on the day you get your first paycheck of the month (the first of the month for most people). Once you have that in place, you want to set up automatic savings plans (Sethi suggests using Ing Direct) with sub-savings accounts that let you organize your savings into specific categories (vacation, wedding, etc.). You'll also want to send a percentage of your paycheck to your 401k, and have all of this happen immediately so that the money you see when you get paid is the money left when everything has already been saved. From there, you automatically pay as many bills as you can with your credit card (and then pay the credit card bill on pay day). For the bills you can't pay with your credit card (like rent, in most cases), you can use your online banking to automatically issue a check. This will leave a little money leftover in your checking account that you can use to budget for guilt-free spending and cash withdrawals.

As someone who's often fallen victim to the faults of automatic payments systems (despite frequently using them), definitely do not forget to stay on top of your bills nonetheless. Make sure you set some time aside at least once a month to do a little maintenance and make sure there are no bugs causing your automated finance system to break down. Sethi isn't suggesting a set-it-and-forget-it automated finance system by any means, but as someone who hates paying bills I know how easy it can be to procrastinate and ignore the task. If you set up a good automated system like this one, you'll be at a point where all you have to do is watch and fix the occasional problem as the most important things are being taken care of for you.

Monday - When Irish Banks are Ailing

By Phil of Phil's Stock World

$130 Billion!

That's how much money Ireland will be getting in the bailout package they said they didn't need as recently as Friday.  I just want to make it perfectly clear that I also DO NOT need a bailout of tens of Billions of dollars so whatever you do - DON'T give me a bailout this weekend.  Let's hope that works! The U.K. and Sweden may contribute bilateral loans, the EU said in a statement. Irish Finance Minister Lenihan declined to say how big the package will be, saying that it will be less than 100 billion euros but Goldman Sachs said yesterday the government needs 65 billion euros to fund itself for the next three years and 30 billion euros for the banks.

Ireland's annual deficit is the worst in Europe at 30% of GDP (that would be like the US having a $5Tn annual deficit) and the nation is expected to slash its budget by $20Bn next year just to keep it under that level. Prime Minister Cowen holds a very thin majority and now faces a "no confidence" vote that could lead to further turmoil with a special election coming on Thursday for a vacant parliamentary seat.  "The likelihood of this government surviving long beyond the first month or two of next year is virtually gone now," says David Farrell, professor of politics at the University College Dublin.

I already put out a special note to Members early this morning on the Dollar and the markets, so I won't get back into it here but suffice to say we are VERY concerned about any instability that may drive people back into the dollar. I also have nothing to say on the US Economy that John Mauldin didn't say in his great article this weekend "O Deflation, Where is Thy Sting?" so please read that and catch up on Market Tamer's very nice chart series and then we can move ahead with current events.  All caught up now?  Great, let's go!

Also featured at PSW this weekend was Ed Harrison's note that perhaps some of the great Q3 performance in tech names was the result of good old-fashioned "channel stuffing," where companies inflate sales figures by forcing more products through a distribution channel than the channel is actually capable of ultimately selling.  In other words, be it the salespeople or the management trying to get better-looking results, they shove deliveries out the door in overly-optimistic anticipation of demand that is not likely to show up. This goes a long way to explain the discrepancy between reported sales and the lack of actual activity measure in the Baltic Dry Index (down 25% since early September) and rail traffic reports (flat).

Even mighty German export growth is slowing according to the Ifo Economic Institute, which showed October's Export Climate index fell for the sixth consecutive month to 1.0, which is the lowest reading since last December. India is facing a mini crisis as micro-lenders begin to fail en masse and the S&P downgraded New Zealand to NEGATIVE on concerns over that country's finances. Keeping in mind that it's ALL about the Dollar (see note to Members) - the bulls should be VERY concerned about these developments.

Another thing you need to see is this weekend's Stock World Weekly which features, among other things, the amazing Beta 3 tracker and, as we're still in free Beta, I can still print the chart for you here.  UNFORTUNATELY, the chart has not let us down so far and woe unto the markets if we hold this pattern through December:

Keep in mind that we are completing the Beta 3 as it's the up-trending pattern we've been following for months. If we begin to break down, that's going to be a different pattern and it's not likely to be driven and distorted by a "flash crash" like our May dip was although we can't discount the possibility and THAT'S WHY WE'RE BACK IN CASH!  I'm bored with saying it so you must be bored hearing it but I still see too many people asking "what's good to buy" when my answer is generally "nothing" at the moment.  If you think the above chart is depressing, take a look at this little piece of pattern recognition panic:

The big news in the US this week will be the "vast" insider trading probe of US markets that will, as usual, include our friends at Goldman Sachs.  US banks are looking at another $100Bn in potential mortgage losses, according to Barron's this week and, of course, China continues to try to flight inflation, which some estimate will move over 6% next year despite measures already in place.

Keep an eye on copper $3.80, that's a canary in the coal mine for the global markets as is oil failing the $80 mark if it comes to that (now $81.67) but today is the last day of December contracts on the NYMEX and our bet is they dump off in the morning and climb back over $82.50 into inventories this week - as long as the Dollar stays below that 79 mark (now 78.67). We will get a lot of data for a short week with GDP and Existing Home Sales tomorrow morning and FOMC minutes, which are always fun, at 2pm.   Tuesday is all of the week's data stuffed into one day including oil inventories plus Mortgage Applications, Personal Income and Spending, PCE Prices, Durable Goods, Jobless Claims, Michigan Sentiment, New Home Sales and the FHFA Home Price Index.

Making Money With Youtube

Online video is well and truly, having the best time of its life right now. It seems to be factoring in every marketing plan worth its salt, with some incredible videos being produced by brands that are lighting up social media. I wanted to explore the state of the online video industry a bit further and delve into the stats that show the huge growth curve online video is currently on. Right now it is one of the most fascinating aspects of online, as brands continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible and engaging the audience in completely new ways. It is a seriously big business and one that every brand wants to be a part of. And it’s easy to see why..

Over 35 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute

This stat on its own is pretty stunning and quite hard to get your head around. But when you look at in in the context of the past 3 years, or even 6 months, you realise just how impressive this is. The graph below from Youtube shows the average hours of video uploaded every minute, back to June 2007. While this started at 6 hours, in the past 6 months it stood at 23. That’s a huge increase of 12 hours per minute in just 6 months :

That is some seriously impressive growth and also shows that just as much as brand video is growing, ugc is growing at a staggering rate, due largely to the growth in mobile and ease of uploading. As Youtube note themselves there are other factors, such as upping the time limit in videos, which would obviously attribute for an increase in the total length of video uploads. But this is impressive nonetheless.

Blinkx shares up by 400%

At the business end of video, Blinkx are showing that online video is starting to become a profitable industry. While Google still won’t reveal whether Youtube is making them money or not, Blinkx have recently announced their first ever turn in profit in the 6 months up to September. And it comes 3 years after they first launched. Blinkx make money through running ads alongside the videos they index, acting as a huge video search tool. They have certainly had a good year, as the 400% share increase shows. It’s also encouraging to see that online video isn’t just about Youtube and there are some other serious players in the market with unique offerings.

Online video ads reach half of U.S. users

While some research shows that advertisers are cautious over online video advertising, due to factors such as standardisation of ad formats, online video advertising is going from strength to strength. A recent study from ComScore (the people who measure things), found that just over 45.4% of users in America viewed at least one video ad over a month. But more impressively, were exposed to 32.2 videos each, on average. That’s over 4.3 million video ads that were served to the online U.S. population in September 2010. This shows the power of online video ads to get right in front of your target audience. And while there are some definite rights and wrongs in the content of the video ad, I think we’ll see this grow even more and prove itself as a valuable industry up there with TV.

Comedian makes $315,000 from online video

A recent study found that comedians top the bill for online video earnings, and one in particular is doing very well. A recent study found that comedian Shane Dawson, who amassed 431.7 million online video views in the past year made $315,000 from his content, through ad revenue. He came out top for independent earners on Youtube and it’s certainly an aspirational case study that shows the business of online video isn’t just for big brands.

Kia spend a third of budget on online video

In a bold move, Kia Motors have invested a third of their £2 million marketing budget for the new Sportage model, into online video. We’ve seen the motor industry embracing social media more and more – with Ford launching a model through Facebook – and this shows the commitment that some brands are making to online video. Not so much an add-on or a nice to have, but a central facet of a multi-million pound campaign. The online campaign will focus on the central characters from the TV adverts and include home-page takeovers and video ads. Cases like this help to solidify online video as a serious marketing avenue that can bring a campaign to life and help you get that extra bang for your buck.

20% of downstream internet traffic is to Netflix

In a huge coup for Netflix, a recent study found that 20% of peak time donwstream internet traffic was streaming video from their site. This is great news for Netflix, and perhaps not so great news for the DVD market. If Netflix were available in Ireland I would be there in an instant and would choose to view all films in this way, as it simply doesn’t make sense to invest in a DVD anymore and I expect that even the gift market for this may eventually die out. 20% is a huge figure and shows how much Netflix has staked its claim in this market.

2 billion videos viewed each month Facebook

In June 2010 Facebook released some interesting stats into their online video offering, which show the huge potential it has to own this market. They revealed that as well as 2 billion video views on its site each month, there were 415,000 online video uploads each day. While it may not be a contender to Youtube just yet, the sharing capabilities within Facebook and the ease of connecting with your community show the potential for this to grow. Interestingly, Youtube now offer the option of connecting with Facebook instead of logging in with your gmail account. This shows Youtube recognises the power to use the huge community on Facebook, something it can’t compete with, to combine with its own wealth of online video.

Live stream video viewing up by 650%

In their most recent report into online video, Comscore announced that the amount of live-streamed video we’re watching has grown by 648% over the past year. This is absolutely phenomenal growth and compares to a (still impressive)  68% increase in video views on Youtube. While it may still form a minor part of the online video  market, live streaming is growing in popularity and use, as we become more accustomed to this form of content, both as consumers and producers. UStream are owning the market here, but Facebook are quickly getting in on the game – recently introducing LiveStream integration with Facebook pages. This has the potential to hugely increase the live stream video market and see it really reach the mainstream.

On Twitter, representatives scan the web for mentions of the brand and reach out to customers with both positive and negative feedback. Making Money Ebay

Gaming companies have become entrenched on Facebook’s platform, while non-gaming apps have for the most part not broken through. But a new group of more practical, utility-like apps is starting to emerge.

In the last few months, we’ve seen a spate of Facebook-connected job hunting sites, professional referral services and e-commerce apps launch and raise money.

Facebook investor Accel Partners recently backed e-commerce startup Yardsellr in a $5 million round and chipped in on a $6 million Series A for job search startup BranchOut. Another company, Stik, which helps users find lawyers and realtors based on the social graph, also opened to the public last month. And Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers recently launched a $250 million social fund on the premise that all industries will be redesigned from the ground-up around people’s relationships.

“Any kind of interaction where a person is making decisions based on trust is an area where Facebook can help facilitate,” said Nathan Labenz, who co-founded Stik, a site where people can log on with Facebook and pull up mortgage brokers or lawyers connected to friends.

Yet, three years on, Facebook’s platform essentially has only three breakout areas — gaming, marketing and local group deals. Third-party Facebook integrations are promising and widespread, but cosmetic. The company’s popular social plug-ins help users find content shared by friends, but have yet to fundamentally alter the experience of reading a news site, for example. Most of the startups that came out of Facebook’s fbFund incubator haven’t seen broad traction outside of successes in social media marketing space like Wildfire Interactive.

Labenz says that unlike social games, many of these applications rely on making two-sided markets and Facebook has only just become a truly mainstream product with north of 550 million users — enough to support critical mass for these types of services.

On top of that, viral channels were well-suited to push notifications about daily use apps like social games. Apps designed around rare but high-value situations would get crowded out, he said.

Facebook has since pared down viral channels over the last years, making it harder for non-gamers to hear about new games. It also simplified its graph application programming interface, giving developers a more consistent way to access a wide range of user data from photos to events and people.

“It’s not surprising that games would pioneer use of the platform,” said Daniel Leffel, an eBay veteran who founded Yardsellr. “I definitely am somebody who views what’s happening with Facebook as the beginning, not the peak.”

His company is an online marketplace that uses Facebook to connect buyers and sellers. “Commerce is inherently a trust-driven exercise and having a real identity tied to a Facebook profile lends itself to this really well,” Leffel said.

acquired a stereo microscope from eBay, and decided to save some more money by designing, machining, and assembling his own arc reactor ring light to go along. After finding an LED driver board sitting around as well as ordering some surface mount LEDs, he set about using a lathe to cut away a block of lexan, making sure to include slots for the lights as well as the microscope mount point. Follow the link to see the detailed build photos, as well as some comparison shots with and without the ring light.

A month or two earlier though, and would have had a fantastic start to an Iron Man costume.
